Body Shapes

< 1 min read

The body shape of an electric guitar can normally be split into the following types & categories, with most guitars being based on at least some of the design features below or a combination of the features:

Double Cut #

  • ST (Stratocaster)
  • DC (SG)
  • LPJ (Les Paul Junior Style)

Single Cut #

  • TL (Telecaster)
  • LP (Les Paul Style)

Offset #

  • JG (Jaguar)
  • JM (Jazzmaster)
  • MG (Mustang)

V #

  • V (Flying V)

As you can see from the list above, Fender & Gibson have contributed most to the styles we know and love today, as well as being the de facto standard which others try to match.

There are additional points that should also be mentioned when talking about electric guitar body shapes. First is comfort carves, which are used to soften and shape the form to allow either more access or a more comfortable playing position.

Second is round overs and chamfers, which are also used to create a more comfortable feel to the body.

And third is cut-outs, which have been used to lighten a guitar body as well as being used for carry handles.
